Intralipotherapy – Face and Body Fat dissolving Injections

What is Intralipotherapy

Intralipotherapy is a treatment that can be used to target stubborn fat pockets in a number of areas. Intralipotherapy is a safe and effective fat dissolving injection treatment that reduces fat cells in the treated area, it produces long lasting results, which means you can banish those annoying areas of stubborn fat.

Skintalks uses the 3rd generation of Sodium Deoxycholate, which is far safer and more effective than the earlier solutions, when injected in to the fat cells they become liquified and permanently destroyed, the fat is then removed naturally by the bodies lymphatic system.

Intralipotherapy is used to treat pockets of fat that are difficult to remove through diet and exercise alone, it is not a weight loss solution.

Which areas can be Treated?

The most commonly treated areas are the hips, thighs, knees and ankles, the area underneath the buttocks, the stomach the back and the fat pad underneath the chin, but it can be used wherever stubborn fat is a problem, including the upper arms, face, man boobs, eye bags and lipomas (fatty lumps with in the skin).

More than one treatment is often required to obtain the desired results and this will be discussed with Helena at the consultation.

How does the treatment work?

Intralipotherapy involves the injection of a fat dissolving substance (Sodium Deoxycholate) into localised fat deposits, Sodium Deoxycholate is an ionic detergent that is especially useful for disrupting and dissociating protein interactions. The solution is injected into the treatment area using needle or cannula and causes destruction of the fat cells which then undergo degradation and are removed from the body by the lymphatic system.

Sodium Deoxycholate works gradually with-in the tissue and the process of removal takes time, results can sometimes be seen soon after initial treatment but it normally takes several weeks for optimum results to fully visible.

Treatment regime
The time taken for a treatment session will depend upon the size of the area and indication being treated.

Treatment can take between 30 – 60 minutes per treatment and you will typically require 2 – 8 treatments, 4 weeks apart. Some people may see significant results after 1 or 2 sessions.

Treatment for fat pockets underneath the neck and chin, for example, may require 1 – 3 treatments of 2 – 3 injections, while treatment for fat pockets on the hips and thighs may require 8 treatments.

Are Intralipotherapy fat dissolving injections safe

Sodium deoxycholate solutions have been used worldwide for many years and there is lots of evidence that prove its safety, however fat dissolving injections can potentially cause harm to the skin or surrounding tissue including muscle, nerves and blood vessels. It is therefore essential that treatment is performed by a suitably qualified and trained medical professional.

Safety is paramount and by adhering to the correct dosage, treatment depth, intervals between treatments and the post treatment after care any risk is minimised.

A local anaesthetic is added to the fat dissolving solution to help reduce any discomfort, however as with any medical aesthetic treatment there is likely to be minor pain during the procedure and some tenderness for a few days afterwards. Most people describe this as minimal discomfort and it does not tend to interfere with normal day to day activities. Painkillers can be taken following the treatment if required.

What can I expect after treatment?

Immediately after treatment you may appear red and swollen with some bruising on the treated area. Intralipotherapy works by causing an inflammatory reaction in the fat cells which can result in swelling for 3-5 days, therefore, if you intend to have a facial treatment, e.g. double chin where the swelling may be obvious, you may wish to organise time away from work or social engagements.

The treated area may feel tender and firm for up to 8 weeks post treatment, but you will be able to reduce the swelling by using a cool pack wrapped in a clean cloth for a maximum of 20 minutes each day. We strongly recommend the use of compression garments following treatment and Helena will advise you on suitable products at your consultation.

During recovery we recommend that you avoid:

  • Swimming pools, spas and saunas for 3 days.
  • Physical exercise for 10 days.
  • Any other aesthetic treatments for 2 weeks.

How long does it last?

The results of an Intralipotherapy treatment are permanent under the condition of maintaining a constant weight measurement (i.e. assuming you don`t gain weight). Once the freed fatty acids have been processed through the body’s lymphatic system, they don’t reappear.

However, the procedure is only permanent if you follow a healthy diet and exercise frequently following treatment. If you regain weight, it is likely that the fat pockets will reappear. If a healthy lifestyle is maintained, the results should be permanent.

Frequently asked questions

Does Intralipotherapy help to lose weight?

No, Intralipotherapy is not intended to cause weight loss, but only to reduce stubborn pockets of fat. Patients are advised to persevere with a healthy diet after this treatment, as this will help to maintain the balance of fatty acids and metabolise what is released.

Is Intralipotherapy suitable for me?

Intralipotherapy is not suitable if you:

  • Have diabetes.
  • Have liver or kidney disease.
  • Have active skin problem in the area to be treated.
  • Are taking blood thinning medicine e.g warfarin.

Who can carry out Intralipotherapy fat dissolving injections?

Intralipotherapy should only be administered by fully trained medical professionals such as a doctor or nurse.

Are Intralipotherapy results permanent?

Whilst the body can regenerate fat cells – the process is very slow. So once fat cells are removed from a localised area your results are as good as permanent. However, if you do not continue to maintain a healthy lifestyle then your body will put on weight in other areas of your body where fat cells remain.

Can Intralipotherapy be used in combination with other treatments?

Yes, a combination with Ultherapy ultrasound cavitation is especially recommended. With the said combination the results can be further enhanced – the low frequency ultrasound produces a strong wave of pressure that specifically targets fat cell membranes causing them to disintegrate, the fat contents are then removed by the body.
